After more than a year of technical advice, consultation and negotiation, the revised European Sustainability Reporting Standards are no longer a proposal.
Key Changes Introduced by the Revised ESRS
On 3 July 2026, the European Commission adopted the finalized standards as part of the wider Omnibus I simplification package, and following scrutiny by the European Parliament and the Council, the delegated act was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 21 September 2026 as Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/1563. It will enter into force on 10 November 2026 and, as an EU Regulation, applies directly across all Member States without the need for national transposition.
The revised ESRS introduce several changes; fair presentation is now judged at the level of the sustainability statement as a whole, a top-down approach is introduced to the double materiality assessment process, value chain requests are capped and undertakings have three available options to choose from when preparing their FY2026 sustainability statements.
